BIO / Artist’s Statement
Dan Staroff is a professional artist whose work has appeared in select galleries, exhibitions and publications. He is the creator of the internationally acclaimed Tarot of the Sephiroth, and has operated his digital retouching studio since 1999, now located in Southern California.

Formally trained in painting, printmaking and photography, (Brooklyn College CUNY, and the School of Visual Arts in NYC) his illustrations have appeared in the pages of books and national magazines, and have been donated for use by numerous educational and charitable organizations. His paintings have been included in group and solo shows
from New York City to Maine, as well as New York City’s International Art EXPO.

Seuss meets Gorky
In his most personal body of work to date - Botanical Machinery - Staroff combines the biomorphic automatism of Arshile Gorky and William Baziotes with the raucous vision
of Theodor (Dr. Seuss) Geisel, and offers up a series of paintings devoid of guile, artifice or human reference.

Beginning with “automatic” sketches, the artist fleshes out the personality of the forms through the use of an expressive and often humorous line, and imbues these elements
with a contemplative stillness and playful dignity.

A celebration of the infinite and complex beauty of natural forms, these disarming, decorative, and intimate (all originals are 12”x16” or smaller) works invite you into a rich, color filled world with a mid-century modern aesthetic.
